Understanding Complicated Ideas in Plain Language
When people hear the words “estate planning,” many think it’s something only rich people need to be concerned about. Or they imagine long, confusing documents filled with strange, complex words like “executor,” “trustee,” “beneficiary,” and “power of attorney.”
However, estate planning isn’t just for the wealthy, and it doesn’t have to be complicated either. In fact, learning the basics of estate planning can be simple if someone takes the time to explain it clearly.
A good example of making things plain comes from the Bible in the Book of Acts where we find the story about Philip and an important government official from Ethiopia. This Ethiopian eunuch was reading the Old Testament, but he couldn’t comprehend what he read.
When Philip approached him, he asked the eunuch, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The Ethiopian man replied, “How can I, unless someone explains it to me?” Philip’s response didn’t mock him, make him feel small, or inadequate.
Instead, he sat with him, explained what the words meant, and helped him to understand the prophetic message as it was written. As a result, the Ethiopian official’s life was changed forever.

Just like the Ethiopian eunuch needed someone to break down the scriptures, many of us need someone to break down estate planning. Once you learn the lingo, you realize estate planning isn’t scary or difficult, but it is necessary to make sure you are taking care of the people you love.
Learning the plain language of estate planning will empower you to have those seemingly difficult conversations. Learning the lingo will help you to make the right decisions instead of leaving it up to others after you are gone. It’s a way to protect your family and your future, all by simply understanding a few important terms.
