Announces Leadership Transition as New Board Chairman Takes the Helm

Greensboro, NC – November 22, 2024 – Summit Credit Union is proud to announce that Jack Thornton, Chairman of the Board, has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation. This honor recognizes his exceptional dedication and lasting contributions to Summit Credit Union and the broader credit union industry.

Jack’s journey with Summit Credit Union began in 1987 as a volunteer board member, marking the start of a remarkable 37-year legacy of service. He assumed the role of Chairman of the Board in 2002. During his tenure Jack drove significant advancements that shaped the organization’s growth and sustainability.

Key accomplishments include leading a seamless CEO transition with the retirement of Elizabeth “Sis” Hamilton, a pioneer within the credit union industry, and overseeing the evolution of Summit’s governance structure to ensure efficient operations. Under Jack’s leadership Summit Credit Union expanded its reach through mergers, embraced innovative technology, and enhanced its product offerings to better serve its members. His strategic vision has been instrumental in fostering a strong and dynamic senior management team.

“Jack embodies the true spirit of leadership,” said Sam Whitehurst, President & CEO of Summit Credit Union. “His unwavering commitment, strategic foresight, and passion for member advocacy have been integral to Summit’s success. Jack’s influence is not only embedded in our credit union’s DNA, but also felt across the entire credit union community.”

Though Jack Thornton stepped down at the end of October 2024 from his role as Chairman, he will continue to serve on the board, providing his invaluable insights and experience. Summit Credit Union is also excited to announce that Dan Greene, CPA will assume the role of Chairman of the Board. Dan has been a dedicated member of the board for the past 10 years and has served as Vice Chair, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of Summit’s mission and vision.

“Receiving this recognition is truly an honor. But, what I am most proud of is what we have accomplished together,” said Jack. “As I step back from the role of Chairman, I am excited to remain on the board and support Dan Greene as he steps into this new leadership role. His decade of experience on the board and tenure as Vice Chair will ensure a smooth transition and continual success for our credit union.”

Sam Whitehurst, President & CEO, expressed his confidence in Dan’s leadership: “We are thrilled to welcome Dan into this role.
